More Americans Raiding Retirement Funds

More Americans Raiding Retirement FundsAccording to the Profit Sharing/401(k) Council of America, the number of Americans who have taken loans from their retirement funds has risen to 18 percent, from 11 percent in 2006. As the economic crisis worsens, retirement funds are being looked at as a ready source of cash to cover debts or other needs. Many of these withdrawals are actually loans against the account, which must be repaid with interest to avoid penalties.

The number of Americans who are borrowing from employer-sponsored retirement plans is even higher, at about 25%. Nearly half of all borrowers indicate that their loans or withdrawals will cover non-mortgage consumer debt. For loans from employer-sponsored plans, the borrowed amount plus interest must be repaid within five years or immediately upon severance from the employer. Otherwise, the loan will be treated as a non-qualified distribution, subject to taxes and a distribution penalty.

When it comes to retirement funds, avoiding withdrawals altogether until you’re fully eligible and you need the money is the preferred option. Diversifying your retirement portfolio to include non-cash assets is also a good strategy. You’ll balance your portfolio and you’ll also be less likely to raid non-cash assets in a moment of panic.

Mexico Economy Growing Despite Slowdown In USThe first quarter figures are in and the Mexico economy is growing despite the economic slowdown in the US. The US is a major trade partner of the US, and economists widely expected a softening of the Mexico economy in the first quarter.

Instead, industrial production actually increased, in part because other nations are turning to Mexico to supplement their own production capacity. This is excellent news for Mexico. It means that the government’s effort to expand Mexico’s trade is working. Mexico is becoming less dependent upon the US.

One area in which Mexico has been working hard is the promotion of tourism. The Mexican federal government is spending billions of pesos to promote infrastructure investments in the country. New roads and interstate highways are being built in strategic locations. These highways replace existing roads and in some cases are forging new connections to cities all over the country.

Providing safe, healthful drinking water to the entire country is a high priority for Mexico. Mexico’s aging water infrastructure is in dire need of replacement, and the government is funding new pipeline projects and new water treatment facilities to nmke the most of Mexico’s natural water reserves.
