Puerto Vallarta has a great public transportation system, but you may decide that you want to bring a private vehicle here once your Puerto Vallarta winter home is ready.

If you decide to bring your car along for the ride, you’ll need a Car Import Permit. The good news is that once you have the permit, it’s valid as long as your immigration status is valid or is in the process of being renewed. Keep a copy of your valid FM3 visa, a copy of your passport, and the documents you’re given when you acquire the Car Import Permit in your car and you should be set.

A side benefit is that you’ll save plenty of money on vehicle registration fees. You won’t need to pay those again unless you return to the United States. Your Car Import Permit won’t expire upon leaving the country, either. You’re free to cross the border as you travel to and from your Puerto Vallarta winter home.

The Car Import Permit doesn’t place restrictions on who may drive the car either, so you and your spouse can drive freely. You’ll find that driving in Mexico isn’t quite like driving in the United States, and many people recommend that you don’t drive at night, for safety reasons.

Whether you decide to bring a car to your Puerto Vallarta winter home, buy a vehicle here, or go without and use public transportation, you’ll find that it’s easy to register your vehicle here. Even better, it’s cheaper to operate your vehicle here because the Federal government regulates the price of gas.
