Going to Puerto Vallarta sounds like a fun vacation, but for a growing number of US citizens, a trip to Puerto Vallarta means receiving medical services that are not available or too expensive in the US.

Don’t assume that the doctors who perform these treatments are under-educated doctors looking to make a quick buck from desperate people. Many of the doctors who practice here in Puerto Vallarta are US citizens, have been trained and are licensed to practice in the US and practice in hospitals here that are indistinguishable from hospitals in the US.

So why do they practice here instead? In some cases, medical treatments that aren’t available or approved in the US can be delivered here. For example, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive procedure that is used worldwide as a successful treatment for prostate cancer without the common side effects of impotence and incontinence. It’s not approved in the US, and US insurance companies won’t pay for the procedure, despite a long track record of success.

In another case, a specific bypass technique used in bariatric surgery has shown itself to produce a sharp decline in the incidence of insulin-dependent diabetes. This phenomenon has also been studied worldwide and experts agree that this particular technique shows real promise for insulin-dependent diabetics. More than 90 percent of patients who received this surgery now show no signs of insulin dependent diabetes. Unfortunately, the surgery – while available in the United States – is not approved for use in the treatment of diabetes.

Both of these cutting-edge treatments are available in Puerto Vallarta. That should tell you at least two things; first, the quality of medical care here is high and provides some services that are successfully used elsewhere but not available in the US. Second, it should tell you something about the affordability of the care here. If ordinary people are coming here and paying for medical treatments out of pocket, the cost of medical care here must not be prohibitively expensive.
